About Us

Hokubei Mainichi, Inc., was originally established for people interested in news about Japan and the Japanese-American community. For over 50 years we have been publishing a bilingual newspaper issued Tuesday to Saturday, five days a week. We are well-regarded by the community, having received numerous awards as a leading newspaper, including the JAPANESE FOREIGN MINISTER’S SPECIAL AWARD in 2004. As a Japanese/English bilingual paper, we have the most subscribers in our service area. To better service our readers, we created this website to provide more timely access to news, more articles with greater depth, and a broader range of services and resources.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to publish information about what is happening in the lives of both Japanese and Japanese-Americans and to meet their needs as a bilingual community newspaper.

Goal

Given our leadership role as a resource for Japanese/Japanese American concerns in Northern California, our goal is to provide current and breaking news to our readers.

History

In 1948, Hokubei Mainichi, Inc., was established in San Francisco as a bridge to the next generation. The objective was to meet the needs of the Japanese and the Japanese-American communities and to provide a much needed information resource as a daily publication. After more than a half-century, we are still at the center of information for the community as a bilingual newspaper. When the paper was first launched, it had as its core mission being a "service to society". Today, with the exciting addition of Hokubei Online, we are striving to continue providing the information which most meets our subscribers' needs.
