SAN JOSE — A community meeting on the Japantown Corporation Yard redevelopment project will be held on Wednesday, April 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Northside Community Center, 488 N. 6th St. (at Empire).
The project proposes up to 600 single-family attached residential units; 16,000 to 30,000 square feet of commercial uses; and a public park and community center containing from 10,000 to 20,000 square feet on a 5.23-acre site, formerly a city-owned maintenance yard, bounded by North 6th, North 7th, Jackson and Taylor streets. The developer is Portland, Ore.-based Williams & Dame Development Inc.
Development on the Corporation Yard site would consist of approximately four mid- to high-rise buildings, ranging in height from between approximately six to 14 stories.
Over the past month, the project has gone before the city’s Historic Landmarks Commission and the Planning Department took public comments on the project’s DEIR (draft environmental impact report), including a response from the Japantown Community Congress. The site was also opened to the public during an archaeological dig for artifacts from old Chinatown.
The purpose of the meeting is to explain the public process for the project so that community members will understand when and how key decisions that affect them will be made.
San Jose City Councilman Sam Liccardo of District 3 will welcome attendees and introduce project team members.
Ron Eddow, senior planner for the San Jose Planning Department, will review the agenda and explain the public process, current status, and tentative schedule for the project.
He will then facilitate comments and questions from community members about the proposed project, and direct the developer or appropriate city staff to respond. Eddow will conclude by explaining the next steps for the project.
Additional information is available on the city’s website: www.sanjoseca.gov/ planning.
